Why this petition matters

Started by BC Epilepsy Society

The Ministry of Health has no current business plan to enact growth and expansion for adult epilepsy services in British Columbia. For decades, adult epilepsy has been grossly mismanaged in the current structure within Vancouver Coastal Health Authority at Vancouver General Hospital. We acknowledge the first-rate doctors who have stayed and persevered through a politicized, under-resourced, and underfunded system that has negatively impacted the lives of too many of their patients.

There exists an opportunity to incorporate a second Seizure Investigation Unit and 8 additional adult epilepsy beds through the $1.49 billion Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment Project. This would address our current distressed capacity of only 4 adult epilepsy beds at Vancouver General Hospital for the entire province (Alberta has 10 adult epilepsy beds with a population of ~1 million less people).

Royal Columbian Hospital is part of Fraser Health Authority, a separate health authority from Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. For this reason, adult epilepsy must be transitioned to Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) to have the appropriate distribution of beds at Royal Columbian Hospital with provincial oversight. Adult epilepsy should have a provincial mandate, just like pediatric epilepsy and both should exist in PHSA, not just the pediatric epilepsy program.

Adult epilepsy services should be spread across all health authorities in BC and have provincial oversight and accountability through PHSA.

Sign our petition today if you are in agreement that the adult epilepsy crisis in BC must end through the creation of a business plan; that BC's adult epilepsy program must be transitioned from Vancouver Coastal Health Authority to PHSA; and that an adult epilepsy clinic must be included in the $1.49 billion Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment Project.
