Odysee, an open source video sharing platform alternative to YouTube, is one of the most promising free (as in freedom) alternative platforms.

Actually, users can't monetize their videos if they are "Reuploads or derivative of works on top of other public/copyright-free/creative commons content" (source: https://help.odysee.tv/category-monetization/category-earningsperview/eligibility/

This is not fair for a bunch of users, nor it is good for the platform, because people are not encouraged to come on Odysee, and users who are already on it tend to go toward other non-free platforms.

We understand the goal of the platform would be to get more original content, but that's not the right way in our opinion.

For instance: users that upload overviews of software with a free music track in the background, couldn't be monetized. Users uploading mixes of old, and sometimes even rare, music (which is not copyrighted anymore) difficult to find, couldn't be monetized. Users uploading translations of other videos (both audio and subtitles) are not considered useful for the public, so they could not be monetized neither. This is a nonsense, this is still work, which sometimes can even require days or weeks in order to be completed, and it's simply not fair that these users are not rewarded for their work. Free content is used to create new videos that entertain users, are helpful to users, and also help to promote the contents on which it is based. Last example, just think of an interview more than 2 hours long. Adding subtitles to the video so that a broader community can watch it requires a huge work; it's a work from which all the community benefits.

But hey, download something from the internet and reupload it on Odysee and... bam, your content is monetized, and all your "huge" work will be rewarded.

We want that if a video uses public domain content or any content with a license which allows commercial use (you can see them here https://creativecommons.org/about/cclicenses/ then the video should be monetized, and cannot be treated as if it was edited on top of copyrighted content.

We support Odysee and we think our suggestion would be beneficial for both the community and Odysee itself.
