The Town of Westfield, New Jersey has put profits over people by not renewing the lease for their affordable housing complex. This is an issue of social justice and equity for over 300 beloved senior citizens who reside in the Boynton Avenue Apartments.

Westfield Senior Citizen Housing is a private, not-for-profit organization that is a national leader in providing affordable housing, essential programs, and social services for senior citizens. The not-for-profit caters to senior citizens on a fixed income, who cannot afford a large rental increase and still pay the additional expenses of medication, doctor’s appointments, food, and personal needs.

In the 1960's, Westfield Senior was planned by a coalition of elected officials, concerned citizens, and several Westfield churches in response to the need for affordable housing for senior citizens.

After much discussion and planning, the land was zoned for the specific purpose of affordable housing for seniors. Westfield Senior was given that task and a 50-year land lease, which began in 1976. Westfield Senior subsequently developed and currently manages, 303 affordable apartments for seniors and the disabled at the site. Our lease is currently up for renewal and we seek another 50-year lease.

Westfield Senior is not funded by the Town of Westfield local taxes. Even so, we provide a tremendous value as the number one entity from which the town receives funds totaling almost $400,000 for 2021. In addition, we help the town fulfill its state-mandated obligation to provide affordable housing as stated by the Council on Affordable Housing (COAH.)

Despite over three years of efforts with Town of Westfield officials, they have refused to sign our new lease and have shown a consistent disregard for our senior population and the value of affordable housing. This action has caused undue distress for a fragile population that has been disproportionately impacted by Covid-19, rising costs, and loneliness during the ongoing pandemic.

THIS IMPACTS US ALL, As the aging population is projected to reach 78 million people by 2035, a higher number of seniors are expected to look for more affordable housing options in the future. As a Nation, we are not producing enough affordable homes to reverse the current housing trends. Therefore, we are projected to face a severe shortage in housing to meet the needs of aging adults for the next 50 years.  

Despite these truths, the Town of Westfield wants federal funds that go directly to our beloved seniors to be given to the town as dramatically increased rent. These funds provide the critical subsidies that underwrite our affordable rents, meals, grocery store, as well as provide wellness nurse services.
