Why this petition matters

Started by Charlie Pioli

As representatives of the composting industry, we are on the front lines dealing with the repercussions of falsely advertised "compostable" products. These items, sold by Amazon and other online retailers, contaminate our compost piles and hinder our efforts to make a high-quality compost product.

Greenwashing - the process of conveying a false impression or providing misleading information about how a company's products are environmentally friendly - is an increasing concern.

The issue at hand is not just about false advertising; it's about protecting our environment. Non-compostable items can take hundreds or even thousands of years to decompose in landfills. This results in harmful greenhouse gas emissions and contributes significantly to global warming.

We urge Amazon and other online retailers to enforce stricter guidelines for products listed as "compostable." They must ensure that these items meet industrial composting standards such as CMA or BPI certifications.
