Why this petition matters

One of the true treasures of Washington and Lee's campus is under threat from the administration and it's time to fight back. In Lee Chapel (which it now calls University Chapel), all plaques and portraits have come down. A giant dividing wall is going up. The chapel is already stark and bare without its memorials to heroic students and historic portraits. Soon, it will be unrecognizable.

The chapel is now being stripped of more than its name. The W&L administration is stripping it of its history, its visible connection to our two namesakes, its very character. In building a wall to cover up the recumbent statue of Robert E. Lee with little warning and using Orwellian (and demonstrably false) language about historic preservation, the administration is building a wall between W&L's past and its future.

The administration did not solicit our community's feedback about these major decisions. It's time to speak out and make sure they hear us now.

Join us. Ask the W&L administration to stop erasing history and altering national landmarks beyond recognition. Ask it to stop giving in to trendy political fads and "woke-washing" and stand confident in W&L's unique history and future. Ask W&L to believe in itself again.

By signing this petition, you are asking the Washington and Lee Board of Trustees and administration to cease work on its plans in the chapel and reassess the direction of such wasteful and misguided efforts.
