Moriori Language Week
Why this petition matters
MORIORI LANGUAGE WEEK
We are seeking your support for the creation of an officially recognised Moriori Language Week in New Zealand.
The Moriori people are an integral part of our nation's diverse tapestry, with a rich history and unique culture. Yet, our language – a core of Moriori identity – needs urgent revitalisation and protection. Historical wrongs, false narratives, and our dispersal across New Zealand have weakened our language and traditions, endangering our vibrant cultural heritage.
By dedicating a week to celebrate and promote the Moriori language, we take a crucial step towards renewal. This initiative recognises our distinct contributions to New Zealand's cultural fabric, fostering understanding among diverse communities.
This petition unites those who value preserving indigenous languages and promoting cultural diversity. I invite you to endorse this petition, providing a platform to showcase Moriori language, traditions, and contributions.
New Zealand already observes 13 other officially recognised language weeks, including Te Reo Māori, New Zealand Sign Language, Rotuman, Samoan, Kiribati, Solomon Islands Pidgin, Cook Islands Māori, Tongan, Papua New Guinea Tok Pisin, Tuvaluan, Fijian, Niuean, and Tokelauan. We stand with our Māori and Pacific Island hunau (family) and support their individual language weeks, and we hope to follow in their footsteps to find similar recognition for our language.
Your endorsement is a crucial step towards making Moriori Language Week a reality. Let's come together to celebrate, preserve, and share the beauty of our language.
