As some of you may be aware, YMCA GTA has put out a notice that their hours of operation for all York Region centers will be changing as of Jan 3, 2022. Hours will be shortened from 7am - 6pm to 7:30 am - 6 pm. 

Unfortunately, for those of us who work in downtown Toronto, these hours simply do not work. We spend an hour (at least) on the train plus whatever drive and walk we have to get to our cars or office buildings. This would impact our ability to make a “regular” 9 to 5 job. 

This change from the YMCA was made without input from parents and purely made off attendance at their locations during a pandemic. These new hours may work while most have the ability to work from home but this is quickly changing with multiple businesses returning to office. Not only have they failed to consult with the families they claim that they are committed to supporting. But the minimal communication on this indicates that this was not open for discussion.

Childcare operation decisions shouldn’t be made without consulting the same stakeholders this impacts. We do understand the staff shortage situation facing the YMCA GTA and many other businesses. And we would assume that as the economy further re-opens, perhaps this means more people will return to the labour force. It’s a big change for what could potentially be just a short-term issue.

I’m asking that you sign this petition to get the YMCA GTA to reconsider their decision and to make a permanent change back to the previously stated hours of 7:00 am - 6:00 pm.
