A Equal School Dress Code For All
A Equal School Dress Code For All
Why this petition matters
To the Bay City School Board Member,
The school dress code is a big problem in our public schools today. The current dress code creates a double standard in society where females are sexualized for what they wear and are told frequently how distracting they are to the male students. According to Dress Codes by Henry Carey this shows that men and their education is more important that women's. When young women think this, it ruins their self-esteem and confidence in a very important and impressionable time in their lives. Some women also feel unsafe because of the things they are told by the staff and male students at school. Males are also targeted because they are treated as if unable to control themselves. Making them feel as if they are just hormones and not people. Allowing students to express themselves is the best way in creating a happy and safe learning environment for our students to thrive. Our new dress code will be one that is gender neutral and does not discriminate any religion or cultural customs. It take into factors like culture, gender, race, poverty, social class and weather. Many schools now don't let students even wear shorts when the weather is hot or have braids, dreadlocks or wear hijabs which is part of their religion and culture.
