The Issue

We need Public Support to Force the Mayor of London and Transport for London to Incorporate a Bus Drivers’ Bill of Rights into their Lethal Bus Contracts. Please show your support by signing our petition 🙏

Since 2014—

·      An average of 3 people a day are hospitalised from a preventable Bus Safety Incident, at least one of which is a collision;
·      About every 5-6 weeks, someone is killed in a preventable Bus Safety Incident, mostly from collisions;
·      For the past decade, 1 in 10 Deaths from Road Traffic Incidents in London has involved a TfL Bus.
·      Since this Mayor was elected, 87 people have been killed in preventable Bus Safety Incidents, mostly from collisions.
·      This year, over 1 person per month has been killed.

On Tuesday, 5 November 2024, London Bus Drivers organised a March and Rally to TfL Headquarters to demand them to immediately accept a London Bus Workers’ Bill of Rights:

 1. The Right to a safe work schedule without any forced overtime or loss of pay
 2. The Right to a decent and proper rest break in the working day
 3. The Right to drive a safe and well-maintained vehicle
 4. The Right to clean, serviced toilet and rest facilities on all bus routes
 5. The Right to report safety concerns without fear of retribution from TfL or employers
 6. The Right, when seriously ill and covered by a doctor's note, to not be harassed into coming into work until fit to do so
 7. The Right to relevant and timely safety training
 8. The Right to drive without being forced to answer radio messages and texts from Controllers whilst in motion
 9. The Right to have all company rules in writing and clearly displayed
10. The Right to be treated with dignity and respect by our employers, TfL and the public
11. The Right to Working Air Cooling in our cabs in the summer heat
12. The Right to Working Heaters in our cabs in the cold of winter

By incorporating the Bus Drivers' Bill of Rights in TfL’s Framework Contract for Bus Services, the Mayor will restore the time that lethal Bus Contract Incentives take away from London’s Professional Bus Drivers to perform their jobs safely and with duty of care.

To Protect the Lives of Londoners and Ensure Bus Drivers can drive with Duty of Care—We, the Bus Drivers of London—Demand that the Mayor of London and TfL Chair urgently instruct TfL to (a) amend its Framework Agreement for the Provision of Bus Services in Greater London to include the London Bus Drivers’ Bill of Rights in that document’s General Terms and Conditions and (b) ensure these Rights are implemented with immediate effect.

I had to give up bus driving because of the issues raised. It got to the stage where it was affecting my mental health. Some days getting up at 02.30,some nights getting in at 02.30. What work life balance? That's just the tip of the iceberg....

We bus driver's are so stressed due to the high demand on us to go in & out no 5 minutes stand no toilets no proper recovery time then we have to do long shifts in a row like 7 day's on is very tiring and when we get 2 days off we are shattered our family lives get ruined don't get to see our children etc we need changes due to the stressful life we do the running time on these routes are impossible to do they reduced the speed limit to 20mph and didn't even change the schedules which makes it harder for us to run a good bus service for the public

Bus drivers are carrying our lives and I support this move as a bereaving father of my daughter and the young driver who has hit her. I stand with the drivers here to stand against bus collusions!
