Science and Innovation for Global Peace
The notion of Responsibility is at the heart of many institutional and political discourses and research dealing with science and innovation. Responsibility means that actors in science and innovation, universities, research centers, schools, companies, must take into account in their activity not only profit or competition objectives, but also social welfare and environmental protection.
These discourses and research are in contradiction with the facts where the quest for profit and political and economic power prevail over social and environmental considerations and where wars and conflicts affect a large number of societies throughout the world. It is the people who suffer and die as a result, who are uprooted, exiled, wounded and bruised, while other people are powerless spectators of these human catastrophes.
We, academics, call for peace and consider that our research could lead to more just societies, to greater respect for people and the environment. We highlight the need for science and scientists to contribute to a world of equals, both nations and people, above strategic blocs and struggles for hegemony.
Our research is based on the objective of building knowledge-based societies, on the concepts of cooperation, exchange, open science, collaborative and shared innovations, social and solidarity-based economies where information and knowledge are not captured for economic and political interests.
We seek to develop breakthrough innovations against oppression and war and for food security, the health of living beings, the protection of the planet and harmonious and fulfilling life in society for all generations.
Without peace, this research is futile and our efforts are ruined. Our work, our programs, our publications have more noble objectives than to feed the scientific publishing market and to appear in national and international rankings.
We call on our colleagues in all disciplines, our students, and all those who share these ideas to join us in calling for the resumption of dialogue wherever necessary, to lay down their arms and to direct and deploy the energies of all towards the construction of more just societies. The notion that science transcends borders and loyalties has always been a key component of the message that we practitioners must convey to humanity.
