Include Kosovo as a Recognized Nation on Upwork's Platform
Why this petition matters
People in Kosovo, like many others, aspire to work on Upwork. However, their dreams are hindered by the fact that Kosovo is not recognized as a nation on this platform. This lack of recognition not only limits their professional opportunities but also sends a message of exclusion and discrimination.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and is recognized by over 100 United Nations member states. It has its own constitution, government institutions, and symbols of statehood (source: CIA World Factbook). Despite these facts, it remains excluded from platforms like Upwork.
The absence of Kosovo from the list of nations on Upwork affects thousands of potential freelancers who could contribute significantly to the global gig economy. According to World Bank data (2019), about 57% of Kosovars are under the age of 25—one of Europe's youngest populations—with high levels of English proficiency and digital literacy.
By including Kosovo as a recognized nation on its platform, Upwork can tap into this pool of young talent while promoting inclusivity and equal opportunity for all users, regardless of their geographical location or political status.
We urge you to consider our plea for equality and fairness in access to global work opportunities. Sign this petition today to support our call for having Kosovo included as a recognized nation on Upwork's platform.
