Why this petition matters

Started by tatum cave

Hal Finney was a software developer that communicated with Satoshi Nakamoto in the early years of Bitcoin. He often shared his simple Tweets of what he was working on and what he was passionate about. He also Tweeted the iconic saying, “Running bitcoin.”

Tragically, he lost his battle with ALS in 2014. Many Bitcoiners visit Hal Finney’s Twitter in remembrance of him and the work he did on something that he never got to see the full effects of. He is a historical figure that helped shape the world we live in today.

On December 9, 2022, Elon Musk Tweeted that “Twitter will soon start freeing the name space of 1.5 billion accounts … These are obvious account deletions with no tweets & no log in for years.” As Hal’s last Twitter interaction was in 2010, it is assumed that this 12-year hiatus will automatically sweep him into the accounts that have not logged in for years.

Hal helped change the world and should be remembered as such. His Twitter should be left during this purge to 1) preserve the thoughts he so proudly shared with the world and 2) prevent anyone else from abusing the username @halfin. We want to make sure that Elon, or whoever is in charge of this process, knows that his account means a lot to many people.
