Decriminalize Nature’s Peyote Petition Statement:
Allow Sustainable Peyote Cultivation

The decriminalization of personal cultivation of peyote is necessary for the protection and long-term survival of this threatened species. As national, state, and local policy initiatives seek to implement the decriminalization of all sacred plants, Decriminalize Nature and the signers of this petition find that they must specifically demand that personal cultivation of peyote by any peoples also be permitted.
Signers of this position support decriminalizing the personal cultivation of peyote while also committing to work to preserve the remaining native peyote habitat in a culturally, socially, and spiritually ethical manner designed for healing.

As a plant that is sacred and necessary to support many Indigenous cultures, and one that is widely harvested in its native habitat, the ability to personally cultivate will not only provide a pathway to maintaining the species in the wild, but also provides another pathway to ensure that all people are able to obtain the sacrament that is their tradition.

We strongly support efforts to avoid giving non-native people the impression that they would now have rights to acquire, possess, use, or transport peyote in or from Texas and Mexico. We find that support for this effort is consistent with permitting personal cultivation, which will ultimately serve to take pressure off the Indigenous peyote supply; pressure that is almost certain to grow over time, especially as the spiritual and curative properties of the plant sacred to many traditions become better understood.
