The women of Iran, who face repression and discrimination in all walks of life, are at the forefront of nationwide protests for freedom and basic human rights, despite facing lethal state violence that has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of protesters and thousands of arrests.

Join the global movement to support these women and human rights defenders in Iran by signing and sharing this petition urging all European Union (EU) governments to summon the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ambassadors in EU capitals—in unison—on International Women’s Day, March 8, to demand that the Iranian government:

Why: The summoning of Iranian ambassadors by European Union governments in unison on International Women’s Day, March 8, will send a message to the Iranian government that they are unified in their outrage over the government’s violent repression against protesters, especially women, and will not look the other way as the Islamic Republic’s representatives continue to violate basic and fundamental human rights, by detaining, committing violence against women and young people, and executing them in its effort to crush dissent.

What’s Already Been Done? Official joint letters, urging governments to take this action and endorsed by 39 women’s and human rights organizations from around the globe (read the full letter below), have been delivered to the foreign ministries of all 27 EU countries, as well as to the United Kingdom.

Representatives from the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) have also discussed the letter in-person with diplomats at missions and embassies of the following countries: Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, as well as the European External Action Service (EEAS), the diplomatic service and combined foreign and defense ministry of the European Union.

Context: Since anti-government protests broke out across Iran after the killing in state custody of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022, Islamic Republic security forces have killed hundreds of young women and men, including dozens of children. At least 20 protesters have been sentenced to death, four have already been executed, and 47 are facing charges that could carry the death penalty. 

Tens of thousands of women and men have been arrested and detained, and young women are being subjected to sexual violence while in state custody.

Protesters in Iran are in dire need of international support. Stand in solidarity with the women and girls of Iran who are putting their lives at risk to demand freedom.

Dear Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs,

We are writing to urge the Swedish Government to take action to support the courageous women of Iran, who have been risking their lives to protest for freedom and basic human rights, by summoning the Iranian ambassador and, in its capacity as President of the European Union (EU) Council, calling on other EU member governments to do the same on March 8, International Women’s Day.



Women and girls in Iran, including ethnic and religious minorities, as well as the LBGTQI community, who face severe and systemic discrimination in both law and practice, have been at the forefront of the anti-state protests that erupted in Iran in September following the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini, 22, in state custody after she was arrested for her alleged inappropriate hijab.

Many of these women and girls have been shot dead in the streets as they peacefully protested, blinded by the live ammunition used against them by state security forces, violently detained without access to counsel, and sexually assaulted and beaten while in state custody. Still, the women and girls of Iran have persisted in their demands for basic rights and freedoms.

We are asking Sweden and EU member states to act in unison on March 8, Women’s Day, by summoning the Iranian ambassador to demand that the Iranian government:

1. Stop detaining and committing violence against women who are calling for basic rights and freedoms in Iran.
2. End the physical and sexual violence against women detainees and protesters.
3. Cease all executions of political prisoners and annul all death sentences against protesters. 

For decades, courageous Iranian women, including lawyers, activists, journalists, writers, poets, actresses, and mothers of the victims of state violence, have been demanding justice, freedom, equality, and basic civil liberties for all Iranians.

Women political prisoners, some of whom have been jailed for years for engaging in peaceful rights activism, support this struggle for freedom even from behind bars, by calling for an end to the executions of protesters in letters smuggled out of the prison.
 
By summoning Iranian ambassadors on Women’s Day, Sweden would signal to the Islamic Republic’s authorities that it will not stand by as the Iranian government uses lethal force to crush peaceful protest. 
 
We hope your government will take part in this simple action to show the Iranian government that the EU will stand with the women of Iran in their struggle for freedom and fundamental human rights.

Bakgrund: Sedan protesterna mot regeringen bröt ut i hela Iran efter mordet på fängslade 22-åriga Jina Mahsa Amini den 16 september 2022, har Islamiska republikens styrkor dödat hundratals unga kvinnor och män, däribland dussintals barn. Minst 20 demonstranter har dömts till döden, fyra har redan avrättats, och 47 bär anklagelser som kan innebära dödsstraff.

Tiotusentals kvinnor och män har arresterats och häktats, och unga kvinnor utsätts för sexuellt våld i statliga häkten.

امروز زنان ایران در صف اول خیزش سراسری برای رسیدن به آزادی و احقاق حقوق  انسانی مردم ایستاده‌ اند. وسعت و شدت اعمال خشونت مرگبار حاکمیت در سرکوب معترضان که منجر به کشته شدن صدها نفر و بازداشت هزاران معترض شده باعث نشده تا در تداوم و استمرار مبارزه زنان خللی وارد شود. زنانی که پیوسته و در تمام ابعاد زندگی با سرکوب و تبعیض روبرو بوده و هستند. 

با امضا و به اشتراک گذاری این طومار به جنبش جهانی حمایت از زنان ایرانی و حقوق بشر در ایران بپیوندید و از دولت‌های عضو اتحادیه اروپا بخواهید که با احضار سفیر جمهوری اسلامی ایران در روز جهانی زن، هشتم ماه مارس، قاطعانه از دولت جمهوری اسلامی ایران بخواهند:

چرایی اهمیت این طومار: احضار سفیران جمهوری اسلامی  ایران از سوی دولت‌های اتحادیه اروپا در روز جهانی زن، هشتم مارس، این پیام را به جمهوری اسلامی ارسال می‌کند که جامعه جهانی در خشم خود نسبت به سرکوب خشونت‌آمیز جمهوری اسلامی علیه معترضان به‌ویژه زنان متحد است و تا مادامی که حکومت جمهوری اسلامی ایران به  کشتار و اعدام و بازداشت‌ معترضان و نقض حقوق اساسی بشر ایرانیان ادامه می دهد، جامعه جهانی تغییری در رویکرد خود نسبت به جمهوری اسلامی نخواهد داشت.

چرایی اهمیت همیاری شما: هر چقدر تعداد امضاهای ما بیشتر باشد، بخت بیشتری برای متقاعد کردن دولت سوئد جهت اقدام سریع وجود دارد. لطفاً این طومار را در شبکه های اجتماعی خود به اشتراک بگذارید و از دیگران بخواهید از آن حمایت کنند.

از ابتدای شروع خیزش عمومی مردم ایران در واکنش به قتل حکومتی مهسا(ژینا) امینی ۲۲ ساله در شهریورماه امسال صدها زن و مرد جوان از جمله ده‌ها کودک به دست نیروهای امنیتی  و نظامی جمهوری اسلامی به قتل رسیدند. چهار معترض بازداشتی اعدام شدند و دستکم ۲۰ نفر دیگر به اعدام محکوم شده‌اند و ۴۷ نفر با اتهاماتی روبرو هستند که ممکن است مجازات اعدام در پی داشته باشد. ده ها هزار زن و مرد دستگیر شده اند و  بسیاری از زنان جوان در حین بازداشت مورد آزار و اذیت و تعرض جنسی قرار گرفته اند.

معترضان در ایران به شدت به حمایت بین المللی نیاز دارند. همبستگی خود را با زنان و دختران ایران که در راه آزادیخواهی جان خود را به خطر می اندازند، نشان دهیم.

تاکنون چه اقداماتی صورت گرفته است : ارسال نامه‌های مشترک با ۳۷ سازمان حقوق بشری و حقوق زنان از سراسر جهان، به کشورهای عضو اتحادیه اروپا از جمله سوئد، دانمارک، ایرلند، فرانسه، اسپانیا، آلمان، لهستان، نروژ، هلند و ایتالیا. 

در نامه‌ای رسمی از دولت سوئد، به عنوان رئیس فعلی شورای اروپا، درخواست شده تا اقدامات لازم  برای هماهنگی سایر کشورهای عضو اتحادیه اروپا را جهت احضار سفرا جمهوری اسلامی در این کشورها فراهم آورد.
