Many retail investors and companies are demanding that the SEC, regulators, and the U.S. Government temporarily ban short selling in the United States stock market. Investors are losing millions of dollars due to naked short selling, and companies are being pushed towards bankruptcy and forced to delist from exchanges due to these exploitative practices.

In 2023 alone, over 40 publicly listed companies have taken matters into their own hands and are investigating their stock for abusive naked short selling; many of these companies have found a share imbalance during their investigation. In June of 2023, the SEC admitted that naked short selling is still occurring by charging an Investment Adviser for orchestrating an "Abusive Naked Short Selling Scheme."

South Korea officially banned short selling from November of 2023 through June of 2024 after regulators found “routine” abuse of naked short selling by foreign and institutional investors. In October of 2023, South Korea fined two Hong Kong banks for naked short-selling: "The two unnamed investment banks made naked short-selling transactions totaling 40 billion won ($29.58 million) and 16 billion won," the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) stated. South Korea has now extended the country's short-selling ban until March 31, 2025 to allow time for the implementation of a new system to detect illegal naked short selling.
