Why this petition matters

Started by Lance McCary

If you are a gamer and believe that we should not be bullied by corporations to take down mods for games, this petition is for you, us as a gaming community, and for everyone who believes in freedom of expression. Recently, large gaming companies have been taking down mods that do not reuse the games codes in any way. Free mods, paid mods, open source or not. They can be shut down by a simple DMCA letter. There are no clear guidelines what can and cannot be done regarding software modding, what this petition aims to do is allow gamers to enjoy mods and modders to be able to create content without fearing the risk of thousands of hours unpaid or not, go to waste because a corporation can cast a legal threat that, whether it holds any ground or not.

This has happened enough times that we need to take a stand and bring attention to this issue. A recent example of this happened to Luke Ross, a well-known modder, who has recently been called the “ModFather” who converts AAA games into VR experiences has recently been delivered a DMCA by Take2games, effectively asking him to remove his mods. This is a huge blow to the VR community as Luke Ross intentionally does not use any original code and only makes the game playable in VR.

If this type of behavior stands, this would set a precedent that the modding community can be bullied into stopping any project any time, especially when VR is growing as an industry and part of the growth includes converting established games that we love to enjoy, but play in VR. If you believe in this, share this post and sign the petition.
