Why this petition matters

Started by Judy Lawson

There is a sign in the Braidwood Cemetery, and a roadside sign in Araluen and at the turn off to the Big Hole on the Cooma Road stating that the Special constables were murdered by the Clarke Bushrangers. The Clarkes, the police and the harbourers were suspected, but not arrested or convicted of the murders. The Attorney General at the time examined all depositions related to the deaths but could not find any evidence of the involvement of the Clarkes.(1). Hence they could not be charged with any murder.  They were hanged for wounding a constable during their capture. These signs are historically incorrect and the continued accusations have had lasting effects on their descendants. Council has been approached by numerous means and has refused to correct the wording.

We, the undersigned, agree that these signs need to be replaced with the correct information in the immediate future. (2)
