Why this petition matters

Started by Stephen Godfrey

Armin van Buuren's musical journey has a rich history, initially marked by his contributions to house music. However, he gained widespread acclaim for his trance releases, including iconic tracks like "Burned with Desire" and "Blue Fear," as well as albums like "76" and "Shivers." Until the mid-2000s, particularly around 2006, 2007, or 2009, he primarily played trance sets. However, post-2004, a noticeable shift occurred in his musical style, veering toward more electro-oriented tracks and screaming vocals which sounds worse than DHT and Special D and Aqua - Barbie Girl on his show.

In the past 15 years, Armin's productions, remixes, and sets have increasingly resembled commercial electro, big room house, or a style akin to EDM pop, reminiscent of artists like David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Tiesto, Martin Garrix, W&W, and Hardwell. This departure from trance is characterized by auto-tuned vocals and a shift towards a more mainstream sound. Critics argue that his recent releases, such as "Blah Blah" and "On & On" (feat. Alika), lack the essence of trance and lean more towards noisy EDM, electro, big room dance, or pop.

Armin, along with his Armada team, is accused of monopolizing the trance genre by controlling many classic trance tracks and using the label "trance" even when the music deviates significantly from its original form. Detractors claim that his recent productions fall short of the high standards set during his golden period between 1999 and 2008.

Notably, there is a House Music radioshow under Dance Department where Armin focuses on commercial house music. The request is for prominent DJs like Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Marlo, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1, etc., to refrain from labeling themselves as "Trance DJs" and "Trance producers" as their recent work aligns more with EDM, electro house, big room dance, trouse, and commercial house music.

To reinforce this stance, a list of trance tracks is provided, emphasizing the distinction between classic trance and the current direction of well-known DJs. The concern is underlined by citing an interview from 2004 where Armin criticized Euro dance and future trance, illustrating a departure from his earlier views.

A petition is proposed to address the evolving landscape of trance music, specifically criticizing the content on "A State of Trance" (ASOT). The tracks played on ASOT are accused of deviating from traditional trance, resembling commercial electro house tracks instead. The petition calls for ASOT to acknowledge this shift by considering a name change, suggesting something like "A State of Turd" to reflect the perceived departure from trance roots. Supporters are urged to sign the petition, expressing their disappointment with ASOT's current direction and aiming to reclaim the authenticity and essence of true trance music.
