Why this petition matters

Started by Astrid Andersson

Safe spaces and shelters for LGBTQIA+ individuals is essential to their well being. Lack of these shelters creates potential dangerous situations for LGBTQIA+. In a survey conducted by the San Francisco State University on transgender individuals in San Francisco over 5 years; 72% had been in a shelter, 85% of those left the shelter, and of that 85%, 39% left to escape mistreatment, 36% left because they timed out, and 16% were kicked out. Even in spaces where they are meant to keep them safe and off the streets, transgender individuals face struggles that cis-gendered people don’t have to worry about. A shelter dedicated to LGBTQIA+ individuals that could support them and guarantee safety would help our community tremendously. Regarding safety, one transgender participant in a focus group commented;

"I felt I had to change the way I dress and present, including in places that are supposed to be safe, [where there were] things up on the walls about inclusion. You can have as many signs up as you want to, you’re still gonna treat me different. Places aren’t safe for everybody."

A place specifically designed for LGBTQIA+ is a necessity. Especially because 25% of homeless youth are LGBTQIA+ (Center For American Progress). Help us make Monterey Bay safe for those experiencing homelessness. Send Mail to the city council now! Help us raise donations for the YWCA so they can continue their good work!
