Why this petition matters

This communication is to alert you about the potential to place the co-location of a K-4 SUCCESS Academy School in the Springfield Gardens Campus, which is home to Queens Preparatory Academy, Excelsior Preparatory High School, George Washington Carver High School for the Sciences, and Preparatory Academy for Writers. The resident schools are consistently showing progress in the academic achievements and socio-emotional growth of our students. An addition to the campus will most certainly limit the growth and expansion of the schools as they seek to develop and expand their specific career programs that lead to college and career readiness and opportunities to learn about and gain technical experiences to enter the work force. The resident schools have serviced and continue to service all diverse learners in our community.

New York City's Department of Education continues to give taxpayers space to "for profit" charter schools that do not service all the diverse learners in our community. Our concerns also include but are not limited to

  • A pervasive risk of age-inappropriate interactions between high school and elementary school students which compromises the educational environment offered to each.

  • Available seats at each of the high schools in the buildings are needed to create opportunities for area high school students to attend school close to home, especially since many are precluded from attending high schools that give admissions priority to residents of other Districts.
  • Success academy has a history of not serving students with special needs.

  • Success academy, a for profit organization, deceives parents into believing their children will get a better education when in reality their focus is just test prep.

  • Success academy will destabilize the district 29 schools by syphoning off the higher achieving students and either not admitting or "counseling out" students who don't perform well enough.

  • Success academy will be taking funds that could be used to build even stronger schools in d29 who serve all children.

South East Queens educational community deserves to have strong high schools that reflect the values of our people.
Instead of adding a fifth school, we request that the DOE and our politicians provide funding for our programs that will allow our schools to grow and become competitive. This will accelerate the talent and gifts of our scholars and afford them the American promise that they are educated and taught the skills and means to break barriers and achieve the American dream.

By signing this petition, you are telling Success Academy that we are a strong, united community dedicated to supporting schools that truly serve our children's needs.
