As a resident of Boothbay, Maine and a member of the LGBTQ community, I have experienced firsthand the importance of visible support for our community. For centuries, we have been systematically attacked and marginalized. It was only in the last 50 years that people stopped being arrested simply for identifying as gay. These draconian policies were created out of a need to create a “villain” for those in power to rally against and repress.

Even with recent advancements like the legalization of gay marriage, LGBTQ rights remain under threat. Every 45 seconds, an LGBTQ youth attempts suicide in the United States (The Trevor Project). This is not just an issue; it's a crisis.

The towns of Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor can make a difference by officially recognizing June as Pride month through proclamation, flying Pride Flags over their respective town halls, and painting rainbow crosswalks. Our neighboring town Southport has already approved all three actions - why can't we?

At a recent Select-board meeting in Boothbay, it was stated that this is a 'touchy' subject and if they do this for one group they may “have to do it for everyone else”. But isn't that what equality is about? Isn't that what our nation stands on - equal rights for all?

By taking these steps towards inclusivity, our towns would be sending out strong messages of acceptance and love towards every citizen regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. And not just in our community, but in other communities across this state. 

The Selectman asked for public comment and feedback, and as we are a major tourist destination - the decision they make is even more important. So let’s give them an overwhelming show of support of LGBTQ+ Mainers. Let's stand together against discrimination. Let's show our pride not just during June, but every day throughout the year! Please sign this petition urging both towns to officially recognize June as Pride month.
