Loh Kean Yew has done Singapore proud through his achievements on the global stage in badminton, culminating in him becoming world champion on 19 Dec 2021. Just as importantly, he has has a pleasant personality, and demonstrated humility and gratitude, notwithstanding the success he has achieved.

His feat in becoming world champion is on par with securing an Olympic Games world medal, for which Joseph Schooling was awarded S$1 million. It is also a significantly higher achievement than winning medals in the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and SEA Games, for which our medallists are given monetary rewards. 

Therefore, we call on the relevant authorities to award Kean Yew with the same S$1 miilion reward given to our Olympic Games gold medallists, as the achievement of becoming world champion in badmintion is no less than securing an Olympic Games gold medal. This will be a great motivation for Kean Yew and inspire other Singapore athletes to work hard and chase their sporting dreams and ambitions, while remaining humble, level-headed, and do Singapore proud.
