Why this petition matters

Started by Chelsey Needham

The Dirty Sewerage waters seen & witnessed in Morecambe Bay in summer 2022 have not gone away! This is a public health issue, an economic issue, a political issue and an environmental issue.

Health - Untreated sewage being released into the Bay is detrimental to the health of the population that swim in the water and breathe in the air from polluted waters. It will affect the fish that we eat, the other sea life/ coastal ecosystems. It poses a dire risk to health.

Economic- On everyone's water bill it states United Utilities will remove, 'treat' and return the waste water to the environment. We are paying for the sewage to be treated and returned in a way that we would expect it to be done, in a way that is not harmful to the environment. We might as well Poo in the sea ourselves and not have to pay to do it! The sewage water is not being treated consistently. From initial research this is because of poor infrastructure and other reasons we want to find out more about. If this service is not being provided then we don't see why we should be paying for it and compensation is due to the people of Morecambe, particularly for what happened last summer. At some point new infrastructure will be needed and we need to make sure public money will be reinvested to make the necessary changes in line with public health.

Political - Since leaving the EU/ Brexit our National Legislation has failed to match the EU standards, it has become lax and this isn't something our government is worried/cares about. However I am sure if you've swam in the sewage and see the amount of times our sensors tells us the water is polluted and therefore potentially dangerous to swim in, I think you will disagree with the government. This is a serious issue. Especially as Eden is coming which will put even more pressure on our water removal waste systems. We already saw the problems in winter with burst pipes because of the cold weather pressure when we had our water turned off.  UK water companies have underinvested in infrastructure for decades and continue to prioritise profit for their shareholders, over the health of their customers. Unless the law changes and compels them to clean up their act, nothing will change.

Environmental Issue - We do not yet know the full environmental effects of the untreated sewage being dumped, but we do know that it is the environment that brings so much happiness to the locals and to the tourists. Beauty surrounds, Health abounds is Morecambe's slogan and we want to make sure this is actually true!

We are asking the people of Morecambe, Lancaster, surrounding areas & anyone who wants to protect the Bay, to unite by signing this petition.

We know there are so many of you out there who swim in the bay, windsurf in the bay, walk your dogs in the bay, stroll on the prom, and especially with the Eden project on it's way, we want this clean water issue to be number one priority.

We demand clean waters now! Once we have your collective support for this mission, we can take the next steps forward to make the clean water possible again:

1/ A new sewage system/new procedures/new infrastructure added to the current system.

2/ Political Support

3/ Alliance with United Utilities and other water providers

4/ Links with other stakeholders
