Why this petition matters

Started by Delete Dixie

Delete Dixie Initiative's goal is to remove the harmful language in the University of Alabama's fight song, "Yea, Alabama." The word "dixie" has meant many things throughout history and not all have been negative; however, it cannot be denied that the word is deeply associated with the "Old South," slavery, and racist imagery. To learn more about the history of the word "dixie," its connotations, and this project, please refer to this website: https://deletedixie.wixsite.com/ddi22. This word brings up many unpleasant memories and feelings with many members of the University's community, some express that they cannot even enjoy football games because of it. Delete Dixie Initiative proposes that the word be removed and replaced with more tactful and inclusive language, such as "You're Bama's football pride."

The University of Alabama presents itself as the place where legends are made. We ask the University to reflect on how this issue affects many in its community and how it reflects back on the University. Does The University of Alabama want to be remembered for its refusal to adopt change and promote the well-being of every group on campus? In recent years the University has made progress in addressing and correcting issues on campus in relation to racial justice, such as renaming our buildings and removing Confederate monuments. We ask that the University treat this situation with the same respect and importance as previous projects.

As of this semester, The University of Alabama has refused to take action and has stated that this issue is of no concern. Delete Dixie Initiative formed in response to this claim and has put together efforts to bring attention to this issue, to provide education on the matter, and to promote social justice. We ask that you sign this petition to show the University that this issue is important and that the students, staff, faculty, and fans demand for change to happen.
