Why this petition matters

Started by Glass Soldier

We want to have uniformity across all branches when it comes to demographics reporting to be able to effectively and correctly compare statistics for sexual assault & harassment reports.

The GAO reports that only 4 entities that have access to all information as it pertains to military personnel and sexual assault. That is the Secretary of Defense, the Chair of the Armed Service Committee, all the secretaries of each branch, and the chair of the Homeland Security. Every branch has their own way of tracking representation. The Army currently has 6 options to record race and 23 ethnicities, while the Coast Guard has 7 options to record race and 3 ethnicities.

The Department of Defense is not transparent in all data as it pertains to sexual assaults. Although some report show age, rank and sex, there is a large data gap when it comes to race and the LGBTQ community who serve as well. The 2016 WGRA (Workplace and Gender Relations Survey), found that similar statistics when it came to vulnerability in the civilian sector, applied in the military.

We are demanding for more transparent data to access the trends in sexual assaults. The American people and the academic world should understand not just who is being assaulted but are their trends to speak to this pervasive problem. Sign our petition to help us to end sexual assaults.
