Why this petition matters

PLEASE DO NOT ADD DONATIONS TO THE CHANGE. ORG SITE WHEN PROMPTED.

Sign this petition if you believe in sustainable systems that focus on a clean future for you and the generations to come! Support a movement that tackles air, water, and soil pollution because pollution affects us all. It's TIME to start viewing half of our waste as a valuable natural resource.

In 2016 The City of Savannah created a comprehensive Sustainability assessment with a primary goal of reducing Green House Gas emissions and building a healthy more resilient city. One of the top factors to address was solid waste operations since this sector was determined to make up over 50% of the GHG emissions for the city in 2014 alone. Also of concern is a report in 2018 that stated 70% of the city of Savannah's annual waste at the Dean forest landfill was compostable material. With these reports it was determined that solid waste should be an area of focus moving forward with strategies like improved recycling and exploring composting.

When the city of Savannah updated the new zoning changes recently to include composting in the ordinances for proper zoning/permitting operations, the county neglected the opportunity and decided to opt out of the plan. This means that regenerative farm operations that include composting such as ours in county zoning under agricultural use cannot be classified as a proper compost business and will not be recognized from the EPD until the zoning/operation is recognized by the county. We have a permit by rule from the EPD for collection, however our recent newspaper attention brought up the long journey we still must face to bring this opportunity to our 700 signups at the market and 21 commercial businesses downtown that we currently serve. In order for us to continue this opportunity for Savannah as a whole it has been made clear that our only option from the county is to submit a nonrefundable $3,000 text amendment form to allow us to be voted by the MPC and if that is successful then a second vote through the county commissioners so we can be recognized as an industry for Savannah. An attorney may be of interest as well.

This is our opportunity Savannah residents to speak up and show the leaders how valuable this service is to our community! It is truly through the power of the people and our voice that will set this precedence. Through education, awareness, and opportunity we collectively can make this difference, and it starts with this! Show your support for a company that aims to provide a service that conserves water, reduces waste and GHGs, reduces chemicals and soil erosion, enhances soil fertility and nutrients, stores carbon, and builds community resilience and power. Sign this petition to support progressive systems that allow all to participate in a movement that helps a community environmentally, socially, and economically.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
