Redd vikingskipene! Vår uerstattelige og sårbare kulturarv er i fare

Seks måneder etter at Vikingskipshuset stengte for ombygging, og under to måneder før spaden skulle settes i jorden står nå utbyggingen av nytt Vikingtidsmuseum i uvisse. Samlingen kan bli stående bak låste dører, utilgjengelig for alle som har et ønske om å oppleve de best bevarte vikingskipene i verden.

Det haster. Hver eneste dag med utsettelse innebærer stor risiko for ødeleggelse av det som er å anse som verdensarv – og som Norge har et nasjonalt ansvar for.

Kostnadsrammen har økt som følge av pandemi, økte materialkostnader og samlingens tilstand. Likevel ønsker Kunnskapsdepartementet å redusere kostnadene for det nye museet.

En rapport utarbeidet av Statsbygg og Universitetet i Oslo, kvalitetssikret gjennom en uavhengig vurdering av Holte Consulting, konkluderer tydelig med at prosjektet ikke kan gjennomføres innenfor reduserte rammer om gjenstandene skal sikres for fremtiden og gi gode opplevelser for publikum, inkludert turister og svært mange barn og unge.    

Kun det opprinnelige konseptvalget er bærekraftig for skip, gjenstander, publikum og forskere.

Nå ber vi alle som bryr seg om vikingskipssamlingen om å signere dette oppropet. Byggingen av nytt Vikingtidsmuseum må fortsette uten forsinkelser.

Save the Viking ships! Irreplaceable cultural heritage is in danger 

Six months ago, the famous Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, open for nearly 100 years, closed its doors to be rebuilt as the Museum of the Viking Age—to preserve and present Norway’s cultural heritage treasures to the world for the next century. Due to the precarious state of the museum’s collections, and pandemic-related delays and material costs, the estimated budget has increased. Now just two months before construction is set to begin, the project has been placed on hold due to demands from the government to adhere to the original budget. 

The Norwegian Directorate of Public Construction and Property (Statsbygg) and museum professionals from the University of Oslo have put together a report vetted by Holte Consulting, concluding that an increased budget and immediate construction according to the original project plan are required to ensure the security and preservation of the museum’s collections. Each day that goes by therefore risks the loss of valuable cultural heritage that Norway has a responsibility to preserve.

Halting construction over politically-charged financial disagreements has placed the future of the museum and its precious artefacts—most notably the three best-preserved Viking ships in the world—at an inestimable risk. Due to the collection’s delicate condition, if no resolution is made, it will be placed behind closed doors indefinitely. 

It is therefore essential that the original project move forward immediately to ensure the safeguarding and preservation of this heritage, which holds unprecedented international, educational, and historical significance. As well as making the collection available for the public once more. 

Please help us by signing this petition to demand immediate action and to ensure that the wonders of the Viking Ship Museum are not lost to the world forever.
