Why this petition matters

Started by Shloka V

Brandy Melville is a store of racial profiling, exploitation of young girls, and fatphobia, promoting a one-size-fits-all narrative. But currently, it still stands to be one of the most popular venues in girls' fashion. CEO Silvio Marsan has made public inflammatory statements towards black, fat, or POC people. He states that his store is for cool kids only, and overweight/minority children do not meet his criteria.

Prioritising body type over qualifications, Brandy does not only discourage such people for shopping at the store, but working there too. Eager to preserve their appeal, Brandy curates their employees to look just like who they want their audience to be. Rich, thin, white and good-looking. Sift through any photos of Brandy on the internet or their Instagram, you will not find anyone middle-sized or of colour.

The influence of Brandy over young girls today is tangibly negative. If we continue to pride this store's selectiveness because we like feeling thin and pretty, we perpetuate one body type, one race, and one social status as superior.

Help me stop young girls from starving themselves just to fit into Brandy's clothes. Help me condemn a store that tries to tell young girls whether they are beautiful or not. If we want to continue shopping at Brandy, let's turn it into an accepting, welcoming place that we are proud to shop at.

In this petition, we demand a public apology from Brandy for its racially exclusionary policies, a statement that confirms it will revoke these policies, and to including plus sizes in their stocks.

Remember that the biggest movements start with the smallest of changes.
