SHN! Student Housing Now! is a committee organized by a coalition of student groups, who are concerned about the housing crisis in Maastricht and the Netherlands.

What is the problem?

We have formed in an effort to organize for the resolution of the housing shortage in Maastricht. While the crisis is ongoing, we anticipate that there will be a new wave of student homelessness and vagrancy at the beginning of each academic semester. Many students have come to Maastricht unaware of the crisis, and we are now combining our efforts to 1) seek immediate assistance to students who have been unable to find housing and 2) to prevent a new wave of students from experiencing the brunt of the housing crisis. For years, both staff members and students have raised awareness about the crisis to universities and policymakers, but no actions have been taken that have a concrete benefit to students. We expect that at the beginning of this academic year there will be a new wave of students homeless in Maastricht.

What are we going to do?

Everyone deserves a roof over their head. Therefore we continue campaigning for enough emergency housing now, as well as structural solutions to the housing problem in Maastricht. We will be organizing actions with the objective of making people conscious of the housing crisis in Maastricht and exerting pressure upon the University and the municipality to make them work on solutions and solve the problem. We are following the example set by SOS Groningen, who have achieved great results through their recent actions. As of October 11, 2021, the University and the municipality have been made aware of the following demands:

1. Immediate arrangement of free emergency housing for all homeless students in the city.

2. Improvement of communication about housing-related issues to incoming international students in emails and on University web pages (risks, difficulties, scams).

3. Commitment to build enough housing according to the student population growth projections of the upcoming years.

4. Commitment to limit the number of students accepted by the UM and preparation of sufficient emergency housing in the upcoming years.

5. Commitment to commission a group of researchers to track and investigate issues regarding student housing: shortage, infringement of tenant rights, fraud, etc.

6. Commitment to compensate the transport costs for students who see themselves forced to live outside Maastricht because of housing shortage.

We demand that the University and municipality proclaim their support of the interests of the people and do what is in their power to change the system that produced this crisis. In the longer term, we stand for the reorganization of the financing of universities in the Netherlands from businesses to institutions aimed at education. We also stand for the overhaul of the housing sector in the Netherlands, the increase of social housing, and the expropriation of housing from investors and slumlords. In short, we stand for accessible and fair housing for all and humane higher education for students and teachers.

SHN! Student Housing Now! is een vereniging georganiseerd door een coalitie van studentengroepen, die zich zorgen maken over de woningcrisis in Maastricht en Nederland.

Wat is het probleem?

We hebben dit initiatief georganiseerd om de woningnood in Maastricht op te lossen. Terwijl de crisis voortduurt, verwachten we dat er aan het begin van elk academisch semester een nieuwe golf van dakloze studenten zal komen. Veel studenten zijn onwetend van de crisis naar Maastricht gekomen, en daarom bundelen we nu onze krachten om 1) direct hulp te zoeken voor studenten die geen woonruimte kunnen vinden en 2) om te voorkomen dat een nieuwe golf studenten de dupe wordt van deze crisis. Jarenlang hebben zowel medewerkers als studenten universiteiten en beleidsmakers gewaarschuwd voor deze situatie, maar er zijn geen acties ondernomen die concreet voordeel hebben voor studenten. We verwachten dat er begin dit studiejaar een nieuwe golf studenten dakloos zal zijn in onze stad.

Wat gaan we doen?

Iedereen verdient een dak boven het hoofd. Daarom blijven we nu campagne voeren voor voldoende noodhuisvesting, alsook voor structurele oplossingen voor het woningprobleem in Maastricht. We organiseren acties met als doel mensen bewust te maken van de wooncrisis in Maastricht en druk uit te oefenen op de universiteit en de gemeente om ze aan oplossingen te laten werken en het probleem op te lossen. We volgen het voorbeeld van SOS Groningen, die met hun recente acties succesvolle resultaten hebben behaald. Per 11 oktober 2021 zijn de universiteit en de gemeente op de hoogte gesteld van de volgende eisen:

1. Onmiddellijke regeling van gratis noodhuisvesting voor alle dakloze studenten in de stad.

2. Verbetering van de communicatie over huisvestingskwesties voor aankomende internationale studenten in e-mails en de websites van UM (risico's, moeilijkheden, oplichting).

3. Inzet om voldoende studentenwoningen te bouwen volgens de groeiprognoses van de studentenpopulatie voor de komende jaren.

4. Inzet om het aantal door de UM geaccepteerde studenten te beperken en het voorbereiden van voldoende noodhuisvesting voor de komende jaren.

5. Inzet voor het instellen van een werkgroep om problemen omtrent studentenhuisvesting te onderzoeken: schaarste, overtreding van huurdersrechten, fraude, etc.

6. Inzet om de vervoerskosten te vergoeden voor studenten die door woningnood genoodzaakt zijn om buiten Maastricht te wonen.

We eisen dat de universiteit en de gemeente hun steun betuigen aan de belangen van de mensen en doen wat in hun macht ligt om het systeem te veranderen dat deze crisis heeft veroorzaakt. Op de langere termijn staan ​​wij voor de reorganisatie van de financiering van universiteiten in Nederland, van bedrijven naar instellingen gericht op onderwijs. Ook staan ​​we voor de hervorming van de woningbouwsector in Nederland, de toename van sociale huurwoningen en de onteigening van woningen van investeerders en huisjesmelkers. Kortom, we staan ​​voor toegankelijke en eerlijke huisvesting voor iedereen en sociaal hoger onderwijs voor studenten en docenten.
