A Ban on television ads promoting prescription and OTC drugs
A Ban on television ads promoting prescription and OTC drugs
Why this petition matters
According to a recent report, the US and New Zealand are the ONLY countries in our world that permit advertising of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs on television. These TV ads may often obscure the harmful side effects of many of the drugs being advertised. Viewers are being advised to ask their doctors about specific prescription or OTC drugs, but everyone must be made aware that more than $2 billion a year was paid by PhRMA (Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturing of America) companies to doctors, fueling an increase in prescriptions, according a new report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. As an example, 67% of doctors received some kind of payment from 2015 to 2017. The license to advertise such drugs on television must be revoked. But, given that there are more than 12,400 paid lobbyists in Washington, it will not be easy. Please support our petition calling for a ban in drug advertising on television.
