Immediate action to support the Wet’suwet’en

A petition in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en and a call for McGill University to immediately divest from TC Energy Corporation

This is an urgent appeal to immediately respond the persisting crisis of colonial injustice being directed at the Wet’suwet’en Nation in the context of the push by TC Energy Corporation to construct the environmentally destructive $6.2-billion-dollar Coastal GasLink Pipeline against the collective wishes of the Wet’suwet’en people. 

Today, McGill University holds significant endowment investments in the Coastal GasLink Pipeline, and this is unacceptable. This must change. Right now, McGill University holds an investment of $4,770,450 in TC Energy Corp as part of its endowment portfolio. This investment in a colonial and environmentally destructive pipeline must stop right now.

It must be made clear that by investing in the TC Energy Corp stock, McGill is not only directly funding a project which violates Indigenous human rights, but also delivers a social licence for this violent pipeline to operate while profiting off of said violations. 

Though we are physically far from Wet’suwet’en territory, we are outraged that institutions in Montreal, including McGill, are complicit in making the CGL pipeline possible. Some of these connections were made more obvious during the creative actions that residents in the Greater Montreal area took in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en Nation in January and February of 2020. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wet’suwet’en territory and the Coastal GasLink pipeline are no longer in the headlines, but the project continues apace.

This global petition is being presented by Divest McGill, in collaboration with a network of community activists in the city who are working to build sustained support for the Wet’suwet’en struggle for Indigenous sovereignty and to stop the imposition of the Coastal GasLink Pipeline on the Indigenous territories. We are collectively saying no to TC Energy.

We stand with the demands of the Hereditary Chiefs of the Wet’suwet’en Nation that call upon the ceasing of construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline, the immediate withdrawal of the RCMP and associated security and police forces from Wet’suwet’en territory, and that Wet’suwet’en self-determination is honored by respecting their decisions, laws, and governance structures. 

Also, today we recognize that the ongoing and unwelcome construction of the Coastal Gas Link Pipeline has delivered a dangerous reality to the Wet’suwet’en Nation: COVID-19. Pipeline construction workers have been flown in from across Canada, directly into the Wet’suwet’en Nation and delivered a pandemic wave to the community which has had a devastating impact on Wet'suwet'en elders, with many losing their lives to COVID-19. This reality currently taking place in the Wet’suwet’en Nation has been documented by the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE).

Signatories of this petition demand that McGill University and its Board of Governors: 

1. Immediately divest its endowment investments in the TC Energy Corp stock;
2. Use its influence to pressure the Federal government for immediate withdrawal of the RCMP and associated security and police forces from Wet’suwet’en territory;
3. Use its influence to pressure the Federal and provincial governments to push for the ceasing of the Coastal GasLink pipeline construction;
4. Use its influence to pressure the Federal and provincial governments to honor the Wet’suwet’en nation’s self-determination and sovereignty by respecting their decisions, laws, and governance structures;
5. Work with other universities, including UdeM, Concordia and UQAM, banks, including TD, CIBC, Scotiabank, RBC, BMO and private institutions to divest from the TC Energy stock and cut any economic and/or funding relationships with TC Energy Corporation.

Une pétition en solidarité avec les Wet’suwet’en en demandant que l’Université McGill désinvestisse immédiatement de TC Energy Corporation

Ceci s'agit d'un appel urgent pour répondre à la persistante crise d'injustice coloniale dirigée contre la nation Wet'suwet'en dans le contexte où la corporation TC Energy continue de construire le gazoduc destructeur de 6,2 milliards de dollars Coastal GasLink, construction qui va à l’encontre de la décision du peuple Wet'suwet'en. 

Aujourd’hui, l'Université McGill détient d'importants investissements dans le gazoduc Coastal GasLink (CGL), ce qui est inacceptable. Cela doit changer dès maintenant. En effet, l'Université McGill détient un investissement de $4,770,450 dans TC Energy Corp dans le cadre de son portefeuille de dotation. Cet investissement, dans un pipeline colonial et destructeur de l'environnement, doit cesser dès maintenant.

Il se doit d’être clair, qu’en étant actionnaire de TC Energy Corp, McGill finance directement un projet qui viole les droits humains autochtones. D’autant plus, l’institution favorise l’acceptabilité sociale de ce projet violent, tout en profitant de son opération et desdites violations.

Bien que nous soyons physiquement éloigné.e.s du territoire Wet’suwet’en, nous sommes scandalisé.e.s que des institutions de Montréal, y compris McGill, soient complices de la construction du pipeline CGL.  Ces connexions sont devenues évidentes suite aux mouvements de solidarité initiés par le Grand Montréal en janvier et février 2020, visant à supporter la Nation de Wet’suwet’en. Depuis le début de la pandémie COVID-19, le territoire Wet'suwet 'en et le gazoduc Coastal GasLink ne font plus la une des journaux, toutefois, le projet se poursuit à un rythme soutenu.

Cette pétition mondiale est présentée par Divest McGill, en collaboration avec un réseau d'activistes communautaires de Montréal qui travaillent à bâtir un soutien durable à la lutte des Wet'suwet'en pour les souverainetés autochtones et à arrêter la construction du gazoduc Coastal GasLink sur leur territoire. Collectivement, nous disons non à TC Energy.

Nous soutenons les demandes des chefs héréditaires de la nation Wet'suwet'en qui demandent l'arrêt de la construction du gazoduc CGL, le retrait immédiat de la GRC, des forces de sécurité et de police du territoire Wet’suwet’en, et que le droit à l'autodétermination des Wet'suwet'en soit honoré en respectant leurs décisions, leurs lois et leurs structures de gouvernance.

De plus, nous reconnaissons aujourd'hui que la construction présente et non-autorisée du gazoduc CGL  a permis la transmission de la COVID-19 à la nation Wet’suwet’en. La communauté a dû faire face à la pandémie en raison des travailleur.euse.s de pipeline transporté.e.s de partout au Canada, directement chez la nation Wet’suwet’en.Cela a eu un impact dévastateur chez les aîné.e.s Wet'suwet'en, dont plusieurs ont perdu la vie après avoir contracté la COVID- 19. Cette réalité qui se déroule présentement chez la nation Wet’suwet’en a été documentée par l’Association canadienne des médecins pour l’environnement (ACEP).

Les signataires de cette pétition exigent que l'Université McGill et son conseil d'administration:

1. Retirent immédiatement leurs investissements de dotation dans l'action TC Energy Corp;
2. Utilisent leur influence afin de faire pression sur le gouvernement fédéral pour demander le retrait immédiat de la GRC, des forces de sécurité et de police du territoire Wet’suwet’en;
3. Utilisent leur influence pour faire pression sur les gouvernements fédéral et provinciaux pour cesser la construction du gazoduc Coastal GasLink;
4. Utilisent leur influence pour faire pression sur les gouvernements fédéral et provinciaux afin d’honorer les droits à l’autodétermination et la souveraineté de la nation Wet’suwet’en en respectant leurs décisions, lois et structures de gouvernance
5. Utilisent leur influence pour travailler avec d'autres universités, y compris l'UdeM, Concordia et l'UQAM, des banques, y compris la TD, la CIBC, la Banque Scotia, RBC, BMO et des institutions privées pour qu’à leur tour ils désinvestissent de l'action TC Energy et coupent toute relation économique et / ou financière avec TC Energy Corporation.
