Why this petition matters

Started by George Kaufer

The MTA had originally proposed to restructure the Bx28 and Bx34 to have them take more direct routes through the Bedford Park area. The Bx28 would've run straight across Bedford Park Blvd instead of looping up Mosholu Parkway, and the Bx34 would've run straight down 204th Street to Webster Avenue, terminating at Fordham Plaza.

In the final revision of the plan (December 2021), the MTA took into account complaints from Bx34 riders living in the Bainbridge/Valentine Avenue corridor, as well as Bx28 riders in Tracey Towers, who use the Bx28 to connect to the Fordham Plaza area. While these connections are important, there is a better way to maintain those connections while addressing the original issues regarding indirect routings, rather than going back and forth trading one problem for another.

The solution is to create two branches of the Bx10, another route that meanders through the Bedford Park area. The first branch (Bx10A) could take Mosholu Parkway to Jerome Avenue to Gun Hill Road, thus maintaining the connection from Tracey Towers to points east. This would also add an additional connection from the Riverdale/Kingsbridge area to the hub at Gun Hill Road & White Plains Road, which has a subway station and several bus routes, and provide a more direct route for Riverdale/Kingsbridge residents seeking Montefiore Hospital.

The second branch (Bx10B) would run across Bedford Park Blvd and cover the Bainbridge/Valentine Avenue corridor, and maintain access from Tracey Towers to Fordham (actually, a better connection than the present-day Bx28, because it would go all the way to Fordham Road). It would also restore a connection from western Riverdale to Fordham which was lost when the (original) Bx24 was eliminated in 1995.

These two Bx10 branches would improve connectivity between Riverdale/Kingsbridge, and areas east of the Jerome Park Reservoir, and allow the Bx28 and Bx34 to take the more direct route proposed in earlier renditions of the plan, thus providing a more cohesive bus network for this portion of The Bronx.
