Los residentes de Vieques corren el peligro de morir sin atención médica debido a la falta de una buena sala de emergencias, así como de suficientes ambulancias y paramédicos. El Municipio de Vieques solo tiene una ambulancia y tres paramédicos. El 27 de mayo, solicité una ambulancia a la Oficina Municipal para el Manejo de Emergencias (OMME) para una residente de 75 años que vive sola y necesitaba ser trasladada urgentemente a la sala de emergencias.

El despachador me dijo que nuestra única ambulancia estaba ocupada con una llamada y que la paciente tendría que esperar. Como la paciente estaba sangrando y tenía dificultad para respirar, tres amigos y vecinos la llevaron al hospital en el baúl de una SUV. Desde allí pudo ser trasladada en avión a un hospital en la Isla Grande, donde recibió transfusiones de sangre durante un par de días. Su médico dijo que seguramente habría muerto si no hubiera llegado rápido al hospital. Tener una ambulancia y tres paramédicos trabajando en nuestra OMME es altamente insuficiente para cubrir las necesidades de tres turnos diarios para una población de 8,300 personas y los cientos de turistas que la visitan Vieques cada día. Instamos a nuestro gobierno a resolver este problema de inmediato. También necesitamos ahora mejoras en nuestra sala de emergencias, que carece de médicos, equipos y medicamentos. No podemos esperar años hasta terminen la construcción de la nueva sala de emergencia.

Governor Pierluisi: Vieques urgently needs emergency medical services!

Residents of Vieques are in danger of dying without medical attention due to the lack of a good emergency room, and sufficient ambulances and paramedics. The Municipality of Vieques has only one ambulance and only three paramedics. On May 27, 2022,  I  requested an ambulance from the Municipal Office of Emergency Management for a 75 year-old resident who lives alone and urgently needed to be transported to the emergency room. The dispatcher told me that our only ambulance was busy with a call and that the patient would have to wait. 

Because the patient  was bleeding and having difficulty breathing, three friends and neighbors carried her to the trunk of an SUV and transported her to the hospital. From there she was able to get airlifted to a hospital on the main island. There she received blood transfusions for a couple of days. Her doctor said that she surely would have died if she had not arrived quickly to the hospital.  Having only one ambulance and three paramedics working in our ambulance department is highly deficient to cover the needs of three shifts a day for a population of 8300 people and the hundreds  of tourists who visit each day. We urge our government to resolve this problem immediately. We also urgently need improvements to our emergency room which lacks  doctors, equipment, and medicine. We cannot wait until for years until the new emergency room is built.
