With growing uncertainty surrounding environmental policy in light of the recent presidential election, it is paramount that we in the Monterey Bay Area make efforts to preserve our natural marine environments. The threat of offshore drilling returning poses a grave risk, as has been demonstrated by past oil spills, pollution, and habitat destruction. It is imperative that we as residents do all we can to prevent offshore drilling in our local area.

Santa Cruz, and the rest of the bay, is in a position of heightened danger given the lack of current drilling in the nearby Bay Area or Monterey. As Trump has given encouragement to expand oil drilling, our previously safe bay is now under threat. Any oil spill from these developments could be catastrophic for delicate marine ecosystems like tidepools and coral reefs. Other coastal organisms, including ourselves as citizens of Santa Cruz, could also be affected. Our connection to marine life as a coastal community would have detrimental effects on our health and economy by consuming and selling polluted food, destroying tourist opportunities, upsetting natural habits, and disrupting research opportunities.
