Why this petition matters

Started by Kevin McIntosh

The automobiles offered by Honda Canada and their Japanese parent company, Honda Motor Co., Ltd., are regarded by many as quality products, generally known for their dependability.

The same cannot be said for the exterior paint coatings used by Honda circa 2007, specifically, a base / clear coat paint colour offered in 2007 known as 'Nighthawk Black Pearl'.

I purchased my (Subject) car in mid-January, 2016 (winter-time), in Vancouver, B.C., Canada (banner photo).  At that time, the paint appeared to be in good all 'round condition.  FYI - by necessity, the car was, and remains, parked outdoors.

In the summer of 2016, I noticed a small patch of clear coat on the left-rear portion of the roof panel had turned milky white and begun to break down and flake off.  FYI - I should note that at 49° North latitude, Vancouver does not experience particularly hot summers, and, historically, tends to be overcast with cloud cover more often than not, in other words, not the worst UV exposure environment on the planet.

I thought if I repaired the area by sealing the compromised clear coat, I could halt delamination of the clear from the base coat.  I did so by carefully removing only the loose, opaque clear coat and then applied a sealing coat of off-the-shelf aerosol automotive clear coat.

The following summer, in 2017, I noticed that more of the clear coat on the roof, outside of my repair area, had started to turn milky white.  By the summers of 2018 & 2019, the roof panel clear coat problem had expanded further and further, ultimately encompassing most of the panel.

Upon investigation, I found that Honda Canada only warranted the body coatings for 10 years, and, believing the issue was confined to only the roof panel, resigned myself to having to deal with the roof panel re-coating myself..

By the following spring, in 2020, I began to notice small spots of clear coat delamination on the trunk lid, hood and front fenders.  Alarmed at the potential for overall paint degradation and the impact that development would have on the value of the car, I tried to physically present the car to Honda Canada for visual inspection and remedial recourse at their Richmond, B.C., Canada headquarters, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the facility was closed indefinitely.  I began e-mailing Honda Canada about this issue on 02JUN20 and was answered on 08JUL20 by Vee, Customer Mediation Specialist, Honda Canada Inc., who declined my request for remedial recourse or financial consideration, a position Vee / Honda Canada has maintained through their latest response on 01SEP20.

I have posted threads at online Honda forums that outline the above issue and include many recent photos of my car showing how the issue has snowballed into a huge and unsightly mess, significantly diminishing the resale value of the car.

These threads can be viewed at the following links:

I will also append a descriptive walk around video of my car that I made on 08OCT22.

So, it seems the Honda clear coat issue from those years was well known and widespread - Honda was, and is, well aware of the problem and should, IMO, be held to account for their shoddy paint jobs, regardless of being notified of the problem outside of an arbitrary warranty expiration date.

If you have an older Honda car with this same clear coat issue, please support this petition.

Remedial action by Honda regarding this problem will only occur if their products' resale value is shown to be substantially less than they'd have their prospective customers believe it to be.

This can be accomplished by robust support of this petition and the resulting media coverage.
