Why this petition matters

Started by Feng Q

This petition is for all Rugby fans in the global community. Its aim is to keep this global sport alive in Australia. We demand the resignations of the Rugby Australia Chairman Hamish McLennon, CEO, and the entire board of directors and to cease public funding to Rugby Australia until all resignations have been received, for the following reasons:

A. Rugby Australia has grossly misused its funding.

  1. Misguided firing of Dave Rennie in 2023 and paying out his 4 year contract after 3 years. A coach who delivered close results against top teams such a France and Ireland with 40 injuries last year, and was limited by the "Giteau Law" to only able to have 3 international players. (38% Win Rate) (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/jan/18/disappointed-dave-rennie-says-wallabies-had-made-great-strides-before-his-sacking#:~:text=Rennie's%20win%20rate%20of%2038,behind%20Rugby%20Australia's%20brutal%20call
  2. Hiring Eddie Jones in 2023 with an unreasonably long 5-year contract, who was fired by England just months before for poor results, delivering the worst results in the history of Wallabies. (22% Win Rate with much fewer injuries and unrestricted access to international players.) (https://www.rugby.com.au/news/the-eddie-jones-legacy-and-whats-next-for-the-wallabies-2023118
  3. Significantly blown the budget at the Rugby World Cup 2023. (https://wwos.nine.com.au/rugby/news-2023-hamish-mclennan-exclusive-interview-budget-blowout-wallabies-world-cup-campaign/c4980fdf-c198-488a-a6ac-34c60a53f1d0
  4. The management has failed to maintain a huge amount of key talents to stay and play in Super Rugby domestically, whiles publicly announcing huge contracts to rugby league players. (https://www.rugbypass.com/news/nathan-cleary-one-of-three-nrl-superstars-on-eddie-jones-hit-list/
  5. The signing of Joseph Suali'i at reportedly $5m over 3 years. The highest Australian Rugby Union contract ever to someone with only high school Rugby Union experience. No Rugby League Premiership or State Of Origin experience. (43.5% tackle completion 0 Tries at the Rugby League World Cup) (https://www.nrl.com/players/rugby-league-world-cup/samoa/joseph-suaalii/ (https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/inside-rugby-australias-botched-deal-which-could-have-landed-suaalii-for-300k/news-story/928bcf1583d2baa176cd88561dbf3536
  6. Failing to secure private equity, resorting to borrow $60m after the 2023 Rugby World Cup. (https://www.theroar.com.au/2023/09/22/why-ra-have-opted-to-borrow-60m-instead-of-pursuing-private-equity-sugar-hit-for-now/

B. Rugby Australia has failed to operate to a minimal standards of performance.

  1. The Wallabies has fallen to its lowest win rate ever, at 22%, 2 wins out of 9. Losing every match against tier 1 nations. This was a massive blow to public interest and failed catastrophically when it comes to inspire the next generation during a crucial Rugby World Cup year. (https://wallabies.rugby/fixtures-results?tab=Fixtures
  2. The Wallabies has fallen to the lowest Rugby World Rankings ever to 10th on September 25th 2023. (https://www.world.rugby/rankings
  3. The Wallabies Finished last for the first time in the history of The Rugby Championship.
  4. For the first time ever the Wallabies were eliminated in the pool stage of the Rugby World Cup in 2023. (In a relatively easy pool)
  5. Falling performances by Super Rugby teams. The Australian teams were largely uncompetitive against New Zealand teams. (https://www.eurosport.com/rugby/super-rugby/standings.shtml
  6. Alarmingly poor player management with injury rate egregiously higher than international standards. (40 injuries in 2022) (https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-union/why-do-the-wallabies-keep-breaking-their-star-players-20230921-p5e6j1.html
  7. Failing to identify new talents. Joseph Suali'i reportedly asked for $300K and was rejected by Rugby Australia in 2018. (https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/inside-rugby-australias-botched-deal-which-could-have-landed-suaalii-for-300k/news-story/928bcf1583d2baa176cd88561dbf3536

C. The management has done severe damage to the public image of the Australian Rugby and the Wallabies brand.

  1. Having an senior executive involved in child abuse materials.  (https://www.espn.com.au/rugby/story/_/id/32232316/rugby-australia-executive-fired-arrest-child-porn-charges
  2. Firing Dave Rennie and hiring Eddie Jones prior to the Rugby World Cup grossly damaged the reputation of Rugby Australia, making hiring prominent coaches in the future extremely difficult.
  3. Embarrassing the players and the reputation of the Wallabies by making the players sing the National Anthem in Indigenous language in multiple occasions whiles having no Indigenous players in the team. (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/jul/04/wallabies-indigenous-anthem-yugambeh-language-first-nations-jersey-australia-vs-england-rugby-union-test-brisbane
  4. Rugby Australia's frequent public expression of interests for Rugby League players with "big offers" has severely damaged the popularity and the perception of the sport especially among Rugby League fans. (https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/nrl-2023-angus-crichton-rugby-australia-deal-withdrawn-what-happened-why-roosters-2024-how-much-800000-salary-675000/news-story/23416320402735a99a3f2de0fd382e60
  5. Lack luster community support and Rugby Union still largely wealthy private school sport in Australia.

These are just some of the most glaring issues and the list does not include the failings of Rugby Australia to the women's game.

Australian Rugby has once in a life time opportunity in 2025 Lions Tour and the 2027 Rugby World Cup to turn Rugby Australia around. The current board and its Chairman Hamish McLennon has proven they are ill-suited to fulfill this task.

Please help the sport stay alive in Australia and end the disaster that was the Hamish McLennon Era.
