Why this petition matters

Started by Mandy Magill

All of us, including our pets, are negatively impacted by the unnecessary use of toxic lawn chemicals. Unfortunately, like most HOAs and other large land-holding entities, Tamarron Resort in Durango, CO sprays cancer-causing chemicals on the land in hopes of killing 'weeds' and uses synthetic fertilizers to create a 'green lawn' effect. Tamarron uses Scotts Weed & Feed which contains 2,4-D (a known carcinogen and is part of what makes up Agent Orange). Agent Orange was used in the Vietnam War and has caused vast amounts of cancer in our veterans.

Most often, the reason that people continue to use chemicals like this is because they aren't aware that there are any other options, and also people don't realize how toxic and damaging these chemicals are to our pets, our bodies, and the environment! It is commonly thought that if these chemicals are available for sale to the public, then they must be safe! However, this is not the case as evidenced by the cancer rates where (and by whom) these chemicals are used (for more info on this, click here).

Fortunately, these chemicals are not only completely unnecessary, but there is a far better way to create truly beautiful landscapes that support the health of our environment along with our own health! It's called Regenerative Landscaping

Regenerative Landscaping involves more than just 'going organic'. It involves partnering with Nature and working to support ecosystem health with things like beneficial microbes, compost tea sprays and compost dressings, planting native plant species and pollinator pathways, utilizing ruminant animals (like goats) to break weed seed cycles and naturally nourish and fertilize the land, etc.! There are lots of amazing ways we can do this! And then, when our pets and/or children are playing on a lawn, we no longer have to worry about them being exposed to cancer-causing chemicals. Phew!

Amid growing concerns in the West over water, along with drought and wildfires, landscaping that proactively focuses on soil health, water retention, and increasing biodiversity is safeguarding our future! Regenerative landscaping will save water (and money!), as well as being healthy for all of us, our pets, and our local wildlife!

Please sign this petition and show your support for Tamarron (and other places!) going chemical-free and implementing healthy, planet-friendly landscaping!
