Why this petition matters

Started by Zachary Stark

Thrice now, a gentleman has come to Salem State University to preach homophobic, anti lgbtqia+ , anti science rhetoric against the students of Salem State University.

Three times now, Salem State University Police and Administration have allowed this individual to come, disrupt the sense of safety owed to students at the University, and disrupt the education these Students are entitled to by being enrolled in the University.

Administration has argued that as a State school, Salem State's property is public property, and this guarantees this man the right to free speech in public on University property.

However, where this falls apart, is in the way this disrupts our education, and our access to these public services. Alumni Plaza can't easily be ignored by students going to class or to Ellison Campus Center. Students have a right to feel safe on campus, and when this gentleman uses this hateful rhetoric in public, these students may not feel safe coming to campus, or walking to class, or certainly not entering the Ellison Campus Center building. In fact, students living in Bowditch could certainly hear him, maybe even with their windows closed.

This can't be allowed. Protecting the first amendment can't mean ignoring the fourteenth amendment.

Sign this petition now, and join me in demanding that University Administration takes action, in keeping this hateful rhetoric away from our Campus.
