Save the Christus Spohn/Texas A&M Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Save the Christus Spohn/Texas A&M Emergency Medicine Residency Program
The Issue
“On October 12th, 2023, WITHOUT WARNING, the emergency medicine residency program was informed by hospital administration that the program was being phased out. Effective immediately, the program will not be able to accept any new residents!”
Corpus Christi is the eighth largest city in Texas, with a metropolitan population of over 350,000 residents, located in South Texas along the Gulf of Mexico. For the past decade and half, our community has been served by and produced some of the best emergency physicians in the country, trained at our local Corpus Christi emergency medicine residency program at Christus Spohn Hospital - Corpus Christi. This program is under threat and we need your help to save it.
In 2023, nationally, there were 555 unmatched emergency medicine residency positions further increasing the shortage of qualified emergency physicians. Despite this shortage, the Christus Spohn/Texas A&M emergency medicine residency program has continued to provide critical access to healthcare in a high acuity/high volume hospital by training the next generation of highly qualified EM physicians each year. With over 135,000 ED visits per year, Christus Spohn Hospital - Corpus Christi is a Level II major trauma center, chest pain center, and comprehensive stroke center. The residents, faculty, and staff have all played a pivotal role in the development of each of these programs. The program has not only trained exceptional physicians but also advanced healthcare within our community significantly. The loss of this program would be a great blow to our city's health infrastructure.
Corpus Christi is known for its strong sense of community spirit and resilience. Now more than ever, we need that spirit to rally behind this cause that affects us all so deeply. By signing this petition, you are standing up for quality healthcare in Corpus Christi and ensuring that future generations continue to have access to top-tier medical professionals right here at home.
Please sign this petition today and help us save the Christus Spohn/Texas A&M emergency medicine residency program from shutting down!
