Today is the 63rd anniversary of the destruction of the three Indigenous Mexican communities of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop. I want to share a brief history of our three communities with you. 

Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop were located where your Los Angeles Dodgers stadium is at today. The three communities were self-sustaining communities we garden to grow our own produce and raised our own meats. Our communities were sustainable before sustainable became hip. It was our way of life as indigenous people from the beginning of time. We also had our own local economy in our three communities that sustained good paying jobs and gave many residents the ability to purchase property in the barrios. Our three communities had Indigenous Mexican homeowners in a time when people of color were excluded through covenants and racist policies from owning or renting homes, but not in the 3 Barrios. We also had our own ways of community policing since we never trusted the LAPD or the sheriffs.

Our communities were described by our ancestors as one giant rancho with one giant familia. The 3 barrios are very important to the history of our past and even more relevant to the present day with our communities still being destroyed by racist housing policies and corporations like the Dodgers who invest the money you spend on your tickets for the game they use your money to buy properties in your barrios that drive up your rents causing gentrification, Your own money is being used to kick you out GENTE WAKE UP! The last of our communities like Echo Park, Lincoln Heights, Highland Park, Boyle Heights, Hollenbeck, Elysian Valley, Chinatown, South Central,  and really any community of color are being destroyed just like Palo Verde La Loma and Bishop to make way for corporations.   

On May 8th, 1959 also known historically as Black Friday. The Los Angeles County sheriff's with Los Angeles city agencies brutally removed our last remaining families that resisted the theft of their homes. The sheriffs took out the Arechiga family by force dragging them out of their home and arresting them. Most of the community members watched in horror as the city bulldozered their homes. This was during a time when most of our men and women who served in the war returned only to have their homes ripped from their mother's and fathers’ hands and then handed over to the Dodgers.

On July 14th, 1958 judge Praeger rendered a stinging rebuking hard-hitting decision against the city's action and entering into the contract with the Dodgers. He called the contract void as involving the illegal use of public funds, a manifest abuse of discretion on the part of the city council, and beyond the power of the city to enter into, regarding the right granted O'Malley under the contract to dictate how $2,000,000 of public funds should be spent (It was later spent for grading). Judge Praeger said, “A city council has no right or power to give private organization carte blanche with respect to the spending of public money”. This is an illegal delegation of duty of the city council and abdication of public trust. “He called the city's agreement in the contract to commence proceedings to vacate streets upon demand of the ball club an out and out “illegal act”, a sale of city streets. The stealing of our homes was a traditional “political deal” or pay to paly backdoor deal between our elected Politian’s and your Los Angeles Dodgers.

Buried under the blue is a non-profit 501c3 organization made up of grandparents, parents, and descendants that survived the brutal destruction of our three barrios and historical trauma that has been passed down from generation to generation. It is our mission to rewrite our own narrative of our history of the three communities and to correct the lies that were told about our three barrios. Buried under the blue provides training in leadership, environmental injustice, preservation of community history, community organizing, outreach, and much more. Our organization models itself on the values of the three communities to help one another and pursue happiness as a community.

Today May 8, 2022, The 63rd anniversary of the destruction of our three indigenous Mexican communities that are still buried beneath Dodger Stadium. We ask that you join our journey by signing our petition in memory of our ancestors that are no longer with us and for the survivors that are still with us today. We are demanding the following from the Los Angeles Dodgers corporation, Los Angeles Housing Authority, Los Angeles County Supervisors, City of Los Angeles, and Los Angeles County Sheriff.

• We demand a public apology for the destruction of our three communities and the robbing of generational wealth from the people of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop. 

 

• We demand reparations from the following agencies that destroyed our three communities and robbed the generational wealth of the people of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop. The reparations will include both homeowners and renters.

 

• We demand that a federal, state, and city, recognized and erect a historical monument be in the memory of the three destroyed communities Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop and its people. The monument shall be located in the area of the 3 communities or the Palo Verde elementary school. 

 

• We demand that three community centers be created under the buried under the blue non-profit 501c3 in memory of the three destroyed communities of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop. The three community centers will each carry one of the names of the three destroyed communities. We demand that they be funded by your Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles County Sheriff, Los Angeles County Supervisors, and the city of Los Angeles.

Hoy es el 63 aniversario de la destrucción de las tres comunidades indígenas mexicanas de Palo Verde, La Loma y Bishop. Me gustaría compartir una breve historia de nuestras tres comunidades con ustedes.

Palo Verde, La Loma y Bishop estaban ubicados donde hoy se encuentra el estadio de los Dodgers de Los Ángeles. Las tres comunidades eran comunidades autosuficientes que cultivaban para crecer nuestros propios productos alimenticios y criábamos nuestras propias carnes. Nuestras comunidades eran sostenibles antes de que lo sostenible se convirtiera en moda. Era nuestra forma de vida como los indígenas lo hemos hecho desde el principio de los tiempos. “Buried Under the Blue” (Enterrada bajo el azul) es una organización 501c3 sin fines de lucro formada por abuelos, padres y descendientes que sobrevivieron la destrucción brutal de nuestros tres barrios y el trauma histórico que se ha pasado de generación en generación. Es nuestra misión reescribir nuestra propia narrativa de la historia de las tres comunidades y corregir las mentiras que se dijeron sobre nuestros tres barrios. “Enterrado bajo el azul” brinda capacitación en liderazgo, injusticia ambiental, preservación de la historia de la comunidad, organización comunitaria y mucho más. * Exigimos a nivel federal, estatal y municipal, reconocer y erigir un monumento histórico en memoria de las tres comunidades destruidas Palo Verde, La Loma y Obispo y su gente. El monumento estará ubicado en el área de las 3 comunidades o la escuela primaria Palo Verde.

* Exigimos que se construyan tres centros comunitarios bajo Buried under the Blue sin fines de lucro 501c3 en honor a la memoria de las tres comunidades destruidas de Palo Verde, La Loma y Bishop. Cada uno de los tres centros comunitarios llevará uno de los nombres de las tres comunidades destruidas. Exigimos que sean financiados por los Dodgers de Los Ángeles, el alguacil del condado de Los Ángeles, los supervisores del condado de Los Ángeles y la ciudad de Los Ángeles.
