Why this petition matters

Started by Anne Miles

The advertising and marketing industry is doing more harm to society than the recent expose of the big banks through the Royal Commission, but the industry remains unchecked. The banking industry was exposed for taking from their customers one at a time, but the marketing industry impacts millions and millions of people at a time and is far more serious.

The advertising and marketing industry has pockets of unethical practices, hidden commissions, fraudulent billing methods, practices that cause ageism and gender bias, and the creative work that is being produced is reflecting harmful stereotyping that is proven to be directly linked with sexual abuse and violence particularly against women.

The industry is currently self-regulating with vested interest and without consequences for breaches either.

Brands are exploiting the self-regulation system and the brands who do harm are at a competitive advantage for breaking the codes.

We need a Royal Commission into the self-regulation process and need to make violators accountable. The industry needs reform and now is the time.

There are advertisements on air and in the general public at the moment that have received more public complaints than ever and they are still being permitted to be aired in public, impacting millions and millions of consumers.

It is time for a clean up so the conscious businesses doing great work and honorable practices can have the chance to be recognised. Time for the bad guys to stop winning.

Advertising and marketing does not reflect society, but has the power to create our reality and it needs to stop causing harm. Please sign this petition so that the Government knows that it is more than a few small voices who want a safer community, for people of all kinds to live the life they choose to, rather than fit into some outdated and harmful construct. Time to put some ethics and trust back into this industry.

Each person's voice adds to a collective that can make change. A tiny effort here will be noticed. Thank you for supporting this petition to the Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts.

P.S. Please share the word and help get this done.
