Why this petition matters

Started by Laura Coryton

Hello,

My name is Laura. For seven years I campaigned to end tampon tax.

Even though the Government ended tampon tax in 2021, I’ve been horrified to learn that big supermarkets like Tesco and Boots have kept their prices the same and are pocketing the extra profit.

This is a disgrace, especially in this cost of living crisis.

That is why I’ve started a new petition for supermarkets to make period products cheaper now tampon tax has been scrapped. Will you support by adding your name?

My campaign to scrap the Tampon Tax started when I discovered that the Government classed period products as “luxury” goods, meaning that VAT was added to the price. It took years, but slowly and surely hundreds of thousands of us joined the campaign to end the tax. We signed petitions, wrote letters to our MPs, marched to 10 Downing street, and filled national newspapers with the stories about why this matters.

Finally, when the Government changed the law I thought the problem would be solved. It was proof that people power works. Now, we can come together again to prove people power can be impactful, by demanding supermarkets pass on the savings from tampon tax to their consumers and lower the price of period products.

Tampons are not a luxury. And especially right now, when millions of people are struggling with rising bills. I know that if enough people join this petition, our campaign will be loud enough - even the biggest supermarkets will have to listen.

300,000 people didn't sign my original tampon tax petition to make retailers richer. If supermarkets truly care about their customers, especially at this challenging time, they will lower the prices of period products to match the end of tampon tax. Period.

Thank you very much,

Laura
