Why this petition matters

"We the people, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and ensure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution of the United States of America."

Following the tragic mass shooting in Louisville that left five people dead and nine more injured, we all want to do something to stop this epidemic of death that is wearing down our nation. Therefore in this state of hopelessness, We, the People, call for change because business as usual is not an option anymore.

Gun violence is a complex issue that requires action on multiple fronts, none of which should affect the constitutional rights of citizens under the 2nd Amendment, which states: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." We cannot be free in the midst of so much gun violence.

Mental health issues are an important aspect of this public safety crisis. There is also a clear need for gun safety education. We simply must curb this terrible affliction of bloodshed facing our country.

Our sin of inaction is causing the cancer of gun violence that eats away at our children, adults and elders. We call on our national, state and local leaders of all political persuasions to come together and find solutions, even as they agree to disagree, to achieve domestic tranquility. We call for progress, not perfection, beginning with the following:

  1. Expand mental health programs to improve access and intervention
  2. Improve mental health screenings for those purchasing firearms
  3. Limit the purchase of assault-style weapons
  4. Establish a waiting period between gun purchase and gun possession
  5. Eliminate the current practice of state auctions of guns confiscated by state and local police agencies

At least 162 mass shootings (defined by at least four people being shot, excluding the shooter) have taken place in the first 106 days of 2023, leading to more than 5,000 homicides. These are innocent people of all ages with husbands, wives, children, parents and friends. These are preventable deaths, and we believe that continued inaction is unacceptable. We must promote the general welfare of everyone in our nation.

We must take steps to improve our society, always working to form a more perfect union. Right now, this means addressing gun violence. Please join us as we raise our voices together, irrespective of our political beliefs, to demand action from our elected officials. Through this partnership we can save lives. May God Almighty be our Light.
