On 12 September 2023, Unity Technologies announced that it will introduce runtime fees as of 1 January 2024.

These fees stipulate that, upon reaching 200,000 installations, developers will be charged a fee of $0.20 per installation. They have announced that they are adopting methodologies to prevent Install-Bombing, but nothing is certain on paper yet. Furthermore, this policy does not take into account free-to-play games and games that can be pirated.

 

 

This situation is putting entire companies involved in developing video games with the Unity Engine at risk and is jeopardizing the release of many video game titles that have been in development for many years. This will probably lead to the bankruptcy of many studios (both indie and non-indie) and the dismissal of many employees with families and dependent children. Many companies, on the other hand, will be forced to change game engines, but this will mean that most employees will have to start from scratch in learning and rewriting games already in development.
