Why this petition matters

Started by Dr. Shery Delfani

On the 11th of February 2022 our beloved sixteen year old Ahmednur Nuur was senselessly killed outside of Milton Keynes College. Ahmednur's untimely death has left an indelible void in our lives, the pain and grief resulting from his loss are immeasurable. As a result, Ahmednur's absence is a constant reminder of the tragedy that unfolded and the future that was taken from us.

His senseless killing has had a profound and devastating impact on our family and community and has sparked a collective call for action within the community. There is a growing sense of urgency to address the rising issue of knife crime and to find meaningful solutions to prevent such violence from claiming more young lives.

The recent surge in knife-related incidents in the UK has reached an alarming rate. Each day, we hear distressing news of stabbings, often resulting in serious injuries and fatalities. Not only does knife crime negatively affect immediate victims and families, this ripples into the wider community creating an overall sense of anxiety, apprehension and wariness.

Ahmednur’s murder highlights a clear example of institutional failure. Justice Will Mamah, a known knife carrier and previously linked to a murder a month before , had been released on bail just nine days prior to the senseless act of taking Ahmednur's life. An individual found with a Rambo styled knife and over 200 wraps of Class A drugs was allowed back into school around children, 9 days later ending a child’s life. Despite being sentenced to 11 years for manslaughter, it is disheartening to note that he will only serve two-thirds of the time, essentially amounting to around five years. Again, this is another illustration of how knife crime devastates the lives of our youth, perpetuating a vicious cycle where the consequences and deterrents remain minimal.

The demand for tougher sentencing for knife crime deserves serious consideration in Parliament. By engaging in an inclusive and informed debate, lawmakers can discuss the inadequate safeguarding measures, and systemic deficiencies that allowed Ahmednur’s preventable death to occur.
As well as work towards developing effective legislation that strikes a balance between deterrence and justice thus creating a safe community for us all.

Yours sincerely,

Ahmednur's family  AND Cllr. Dr. Shery Delfani
