Give Wigs, Hair & Makeup Design a category at the WhatsOnStage & Olivier Awards
Why this petition matters
Wigs, Hair & Makeup artists are a vital part of the theatre community and are crucial when it comes to creating a character. Every single show currently on the West End or on tour would look vastly different if you removed the WHAM design & department, and would not have the same effect on audiences.
Audience members want to be transported out of their life and into a whole new world, WHAM is one of the core departments that makes this possible. Imagine watching Wicked and Elphaba is on stage in a wig cap with no wig, no makeup, and no green body paint. Mrs. Doubtfire on stage in a body suit & dress with no prosthetics, no wig, no makeup. The Lion King & Shrek with no body paint, no wigs, no makeup. The list goes on and on and on.
Every year more and more exciting shows are coming to the West End, bringing lots of new innovative WHAM design with them. It is such a shame that this has never been represented in awards, WhatsOnStage most recently. There are so many hardworking individuals creating beautiful work that is valued and appreciated by everyone within the WHAM community, and fellow theatre folk, and it would be incredible if this appreciation could spread into awards and gain us a category. WHAM Design is just as important as Costume Design and other departments in the technical categories.
If you have ever worked on a theatre show with a WHAM department, or been an audience member at a show where the WHAM design has brought the story to life, I urge you to sign this petition.
