Why this petition matters

Started by Marrton Dormish

In 1994, Broomfield voters prioritized local quality of life and the preservation of our outdoors by passing a quarter-percent sales tax to expand and preserve our open spaces. It's still in effect and effectively serving its vital purpose.

Now is the time for Broomfielders to prioritize another vital community need by authorizing a similar, quarter-percent sales tax to strengthen local housing stability. This measure would fund, in perpetuity, ongoing temporary and transitional housing supports for our most vulnerable neighbors. They include more than 200 people currently experiencing homelessness and many severely "cost-burdened" households on the verge of homelessness. Among these resident-neighbors are veterans, single-parent families, retirees, people with disabilities, survivors of domestic violence, and households who are one or two paychecks or one or two crises away from losing their housing.

Before such an urgent and necessary measure can go into effect, it needs to be passed by Broomfield voters. For local voters to have that opportunity, the measure must be added to the Fall 2024 election ballot. And for the measure to be added to the ballot, it must be approved by an act of our city council.

If you are a Broomfield voter, please consider signing this petition to encourage our city council to approve a resolution to put this quarter-percent sales tax question on our Fall 2024 ballot. Signature goal: 600.

(Part 3, "Broomfield Tomorrow," unpacks this small sales tax increase as well as a number of other proposals to help our community achieve full housing stability.)
