Why this petition matters
The people of Maui need your help. Horrific fires have decimated the island of Maui. Over 2000 people were displaced, and over 300 homes and structures burned to the ground, including our beloved Lahaina public library and Front Street, where tourists gathered to shop and dine.
Rebuilding the local economy could take years, acting Gov. Sylvia Luke said, adding that the blazes remade the landscape, from destroying homes and businesses to taking down infrastructure and broadband capabilities. "It will be a long road to recovery," she said.
With Lahaina's infrastructure decimated and no tourists on the island, many livelihoods are at risk. Without income, many homes and housing are at risk.
We are seeking signatures to help prompt local and state action to develop legislation to prevent the people of Maui County from losing their homes during this economic recovery. Without a moratorium on residential and commercial foreclosures, the people of Maui County are at risk of being displaced off island without this protection in place.
Now is the time to collect signatures, raise awareness of the long-term effects of this disaster and put these relief efforts in place. The people of Maui County have lost everything; let us give them peace of mind while they rebuild.
