Why this petition matters

Started by Jacklyn Miller

Product of a Broken System

Like so many others, Casey Rose fell victim to the temptations of the streets. He is the product of a broken system. A system that he was fed into at a young age, that was designed for the purpose of conviction statistics, not a system that was designed to help him resolve his issues. Once he entered into the system the first time he was almost destined to return. And, he did several times. It's a pattern that is nearly impossible to escape. The very people who expected him to walk the straight and narrow never provided him with the proper tools to do so.

Trapped By Conspiracy Charges

When Casey was arrested on his current federal charges, he was never caught with any drugs or money. The charges against him were the result of his codefendants testimony against him, for which they received a reduced sentence for providing. The length of his sentence stems from previous charges that he has already served time for in the past. Casey took his case to trial because he was not guilty of the charges filed against him. He exercised his right to trial and the punishment was a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The punishment was not proportional to the crime. It was beyond excessive.

Fact: Casey and El Chappo received the same sentence.

Painful Consequences

Casey is a father, a brother, a son, and so much more to many people. His absence in the lives of the people who care about him is already painful but, adding the fact that he is not eligible for parole, those consequences are devastating. Nobody ever thought to guide him towards his dreams when he was a child. Now, his dream is to see freedom and be with his family.

Change Is Possible

Good people make bad decisions every day. They say that the average person commits three felonies per day. Does it take a life sentence to rehabilitate someone convicted of drug charges?  We can not fix what we do not acknowledge. We have become numb to the losses and costs of the current sentencing laws as far as drugs are concerned. It is far past the time for action on our part. As citizens of The United States, we are the catalyst for a solution to this problem.

By signing this petition, you are using your voice. There is strength in numbers. Casey is grateful for every single signature, as is his family.
