Ranga's Marriage: Hypocritical Socio-political Agendas in the 21st Century
Why this petition matters
The chapter, Ranga's Marriage in the 11th standard 'Snapshots' textbook for English is a sad representation of the developmental affairs in India today. On one hand, we have the agendas against child marriage and over-all female equality and development, while on the other hand, we have chapters that send a contrary message. While a literary critic might enjoy 'Ranga's Marriage' as a sweet piece of literature that shows us a picture of rural life, 11th graders are given the straight message that it's okay for grown men to 'fall in love' with young girls (ones that are under-age, even) and marry them. There's a portion that even shows that they have children. Please, why tarnish the name of development with such small things? It sends a disgusting message to growing young women, which is exactly the opposite of what us real feminists want from the world today. If you really understand my argument, then you'll remove the chapter completely from the textbook. This is a sincere request from a teenager that wants to live in and build a better world for everyone.
